SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN NEVADA COUNTY
Substance abuse continues to be a threat to public safety and a primary concern. Statistics continue to show that a significant percentage of persons convicted of crimes such as robbery, burglary, or theft were daily drug users or under the influence of an illegal drug at the time they committed the crime.
Homicides and violent assaults resulting from the marijuana trade are catching up to domestic violence as the primary reason for murder in our county.
We are beginning to see the statewide trend of increased property crime fueled by substance abuse in Nevada County due to the increased criminal demographic locally.
My policy on combating substance abuse is a three- pronged approach of: serious consequences for dealers; facilitating treatment when appropriate for low level offenders; and, continuing to partner with our schools to break the cycle of truancy, drug use and ultimately, crime.
